July Check In

Can you believe it’s July already?

June was somehow incredibly long and yet flew right by. I have been living in my new house for a month already, and there’s no question that it a huge upgrade in my quality of life. I actually enjoy being at home now. It’s a beautiful respite after a long day at work, stressing about money and COVID, and dreaming of all my future travels.

I am proud to say that in June I officially paid off one of my 4 credit cards in full! It should’ve happened a lot sooner, but we got there in the end. The following months won’t have nearly so much disposable income because for the first two months of the quarantine I had part-time job nannying that no longer requires my services, so I have to take this win while I can.

My discretionary spending this month was honestly very reasonable for me. The only big expense was eating out once, but celebrating my one year anniversary with my partner was worth a little splurging. My biggest unnecessary expense was spending a whopping $220 on groceries for just me! In my defense, this is partly due to my slight addiction to the rebate app Ibotta and I ended up getting $46 back into my checking account by using it. Next month I’m going to cool it a bit though, and see if I can use some of that cash to chip away at my largest credit card bill (also the highest interest rate). I also managed to make an extra $80 this month by selling some of my things online, and I hope to keep the ball rolling with that this month as well.

In July I was hoping to rent a boat and go scalloping with some friends, but with the COVID numbers in Florida only getting worse, I don’t think that’s going to end up being a safe option. Hopefully I might be able to get some hiking in locally or kayak a bit on some nearby springs, but for the most part I expect to spend July at home, by the pool, dreaming about New Zealand. Living in Florida where so many people are acting as if the pandemic is over is very surreal and scary, and I have a feeling that real travel won’t be an option for me any time soon. I’ll just keep reminding myself of all the money I’m saving and plan for next year.

Here’s where the numbers stand:

Savings as of July 1: $2050

Credit Card Debt Paid Off (June 1-July 1): 9%
